Roger Linn put eight-bit samples of a real kit into a box with a step sequencer, and priced it near a car. About five hundred were built, several of them bought by people whose records then defined the decade — the LM-1 is the snare and cowbell on a great deal of early-1980s pop. It could not play a crash, because the sample memory could not hold one.
