PANArt Pang Instruments

What the workshop made after the Hang

PANArt stopped making the Hang and moved to the Pang family — gubal, pangs, and hardened-steel forms that ask to be played differently. The workshop has always treated the instruments as its own line of enquiry rather than a product line.

Category

  • Hand Percussion

Congas, bongos, djembes, cajons, timbales, frame drums, and the small instruments that live on a percussion table: tambourines, cowbells, shakers, and claves.

Made by

  • PANArt

Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer built the first Hang in 2000 from two nitrided steel shells, and created an instrument with no ancestor: tuned, played with the hands, and impossible to buy on demand. PANArt stopped making the Hang in 2013 and the world filled the gap with handpans, a whole instrument family descended from one workshop's object.
