Steinway Model D Overview
The Steinway Model D is the flagship concert grand piano of Steinway & Sons, measuring roughly 8 feet 11 inches (about 274 cm) in length. It is the instrument most often found on the stages of the world's major concert halls and is the overwhelming choice of touring classical pianists, valued for its power, dynamic range, and singing tone across the full keyboard.
Built largely by hand from seasoned hardwoods, a cast-iron plate, and a hand-fitted soundboard, each Model D is the product of a lengthy, labor-intensive process. Steinway, founded in New York in 1853 and later also building in Hamburg, has refined the design over more than a century, and the Model D remains a defining reference for what a concert grand piano should sound and feel like.
