Mutable Instruments Plaits Overview
Plaits is a Eurorack synthesizer module made by Mutable Instruments, the company founded by designer Emilie Gillet. Released in 2018 as the successor to the popular Braids, it is a compact digital sound source that packs an unusually wide range of synthesis techniques into a small, easy-to-use panel, making it a popular voice in modular systems of all sizes.
A single Plaits offers sixteen synthesis models, spanning virtual-analog and FM tones, waveshaping, granular and wavetable textures, physical-modeling and string voices, and a set of drum and percussion sounds. Its controls are laid out so that each model responds to the same handful of knobs in a musical way, encouraging quick exploration. Like other Mutable Instruments designs, its hardware and firmware were released as open source, and it remains a favorite even after the company wound down its operations.
