Minimoog Model D Overview

An overview of the Minimoog Model D, the compact analog synthesizer that brought Moog's sound to the stage and shaped decades of popular music.

Minimoog Model D Overview

The Minimoog Model D, introduced by Moog Music in the early 1970s, was the first compact, self-contained, performance-ready synthesizer. Earlier Moog instruments were large modular systems wired together with patch cords; the Minimoog folded a usable selection of those building blocks into a single portable instrument with a built-in keyboard, putting expressive analog synthesis within reach of working musicians.

It is a monophonic, analog, subtractive synthesizer built around three oscillators and Moog's celebrated ladder low-pass filter, which gives it a thick, warm, immediately recognizable character. The Model D became a staple of rock, funk, jazz, and electronic music, prized especially for fat basslines and singing lead tones, and its influence is so enduring that Moog returned it to production decades after its debut.
