Martin D-28 Overview

An overview of the Martin D-28, the rosewood dreadnought that became a defining standard for steel-string acoustic guitars.

Martin D-28 Overview

The Martin D-28 is a dreadnought acoustic guitar from C.F. Martin & Co. and one of the most influential flat-top guitars ever built. The dreadnought shape, named after a class of battleship, is a large-bodied design that delivers strong projection and a deep, powerful low end, and the D-28 helped establish it as the standard body for many styles of steel-string playing.

A traditional D-28 pairs a spruce top with rosewood back and sides, a combination that yields a broad, resonant tone with clear highs and authoritative bass. It has long been a workhorse in bluegrass, folk, and country, favored by flatpickers and singer-songwriters alike, and its sound and proportions remain a reference point that countless other dreadnought guitars are measured against.
